GUIDED CASE STUDY · MAUMEE RIVER

From ecological pressure
to accountable decisions.

How might researchers connect watershed priorities, measured phosphorus observations, intervention studies, published costs and unanswered questions? This guided example shows what Gaia can inspect today—and what the evidence cannot yet justify.

01 / PROBLEM CONTEXT

Why investigate the Maumee River?

Nutrient pressures in the western Lake Erie watershed motivate a research question: which actions could reduce phosphorus delivery, in which places, and with what supporting evidence? The EPA policy reduction target is a policy objective—not a recorded treatment effect or a diagnosis of one project parcel.

The current prototype does not produce a basin-wide ecological risk map or site-specific suitability ranking.

02 / SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

What has been observed?

The research evidence includes public USGS station context and author-reported field comparisons. Smith et al. (2015) monitored phosphorus losses under different agricultural management conditions. Observed contrasts are not automatically causal or generalizable to other parcels.

Inspect an observation as a VEOR candidate

Select a published observation to inspect its origin, methods, missing geometry and scientific review state. These records are not synthetic, but no independent project verification has occurred.

03 / INTERVENTION HYPOTHESES

What could researchers compare?

Nutrient management

Fertilizer placement, crop management and transport pathways. Literature may inform hypotheses, but effectiveness depends on conditions and study design.

Riparian forest buffers

Existing buffer expansion or establishment are distinct scopes. A practice-cost scenario cannot establish the phosphorus load avoided.

Constructed wetlands

Design, hydrology, land access and supporting structures determine feasibility. Published per-acre scenarios may exclude critical works.

These are candidate intervention classes, not recommended or ranked projects.

04 / CROSS-SOURCE SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT

Does phosphorus move only in surface runoff?

Compare the published conservation-practice observations with a separate paper about drainage transport. The evidence is complementary, but the study populations may overlap; do not pool the percentages with g/ha loads.

04 / ECONOMIC EVIDENCE

What do the existing costs establish?

Agency cost records are published practice scenarios, not site quotes, complete delivery budgets or investor cashflow projections.

Checking comparability…
05 / RESEARCH NEXT STEPS

What would make the decision defensible?

Gaia explicitly returns unresolved comparability gates rather than issuing a false ranking. The current case still needs comparable full-lifecycle costs, an intervention-specific causal/uncertainty assessment, verified site geometry and a justified method for extrapolation.

No funding match, $/kg phosphorus avoided, verified project outcome or investment return is currently authorized by this study.

How to challenge this case

Check the original sources, their study populations and measurement units. Treat competing indicators separately; total phosphorus and soluble phosphorus can respond in different directions. The case is read-only and does not issue, endorse or update VEOR verifications.
